»negus

negus might refer to a hot drink of wine, water, lemon juice, sugar, and nutmeg, or to an Ethiopic king (from the proto-Semitic root N - G - Ś).

As a mulled wine, probably consisting primarily of sherry, negus recurs in Dickens, Brontė, and other mid-19th-century authors, and is eponymous for a certain English military person, Francis Negus. I came across it in Dickens's "A Christmas Carol".
