»722 Miles

&uotA colleague saw me reading a dog-eared copy of Robert Caro's majestic opus "The Power Broker" and suggested I dig into Clifton Hood's 722 Miles. Similar to Caro's work, Hood focuses on the power wielded by the elite of New York City in his description of the New York City subway's early years.
That the subway managed to come about despite all of the wrangling and financial obstacles -- a major portion was built around the time of the Great Depression -- amazes me.
