The mouth of the Irish Sea around Dublin also features a tombolo, a sandbar that extends from a beach to connect with a substantial island. I had a spectacular view of this recently, but was not carrying a camera -- my recent habit of wearing pants without ample, baggy pockets has some unfortunate side-effects, alas.
From bash.org:
1. Save every Free Credit Card Offer you get, Put it in pile A
2. Save every Free Coupon You get, put that in pile B
3. Now open the credit card mail from pile A and find the Business
Reply Mail Envelope.
4. Take the coupons from pile B and stuff them in the envelope you hold
in your hand.
5. Drop the stuffed to the brim envelopes in your mail and walk away
whistling.
I have now received two phone calls from the credit card companies
telling me that they received a stuffed envelope with coupons rather
then my application. They informed me that it they are not pleased that
they footed the bill for the crap I sent them. I reply with "It says
Business Reply Mail" I'm suggesting coupons to you to ensure that your
business is more successful. They promptly hang up on me.
Now, I did this for about a month before it got boring, so I got an
added idea! I added exactly 33 cents worth of pennies to the envelope
so they paid EXTRA due to the weight. I got a call informing me about
the money, I said it was a mistake and I demanded my change back. After
yelling at the clerk and then to the supervisor they agreed to my
demands and cut me a check for the money. I hold in my hand at this
very moment a check from GTE Visa for exactly 33 cents.
jimg did some crackerjack research about this photo of a sign requesting information about a bicycle accident, and found that A 64-year-old woman riding her bicycle on a San Francisco street was badly hurt when she collided with another bicyclist as she pulled out from between parked cars and was struck by a cyclist travelling at the speed of rush-hour traffic on Oak, just past Scott.
Self-defence with a Walking-stick: The Different Methods of Defending Oneself with a Walking-Stick or Umbrella when Attacked under Unequal Conditions (Part2). My favourite bit is No. 6, "How to Overcome the Advantage of an Assailant who Attacks You with a Stout Stick when You are Carrying only a Light Cane."
I copied the illustrations from the article.
I sometimes feel this way when travelling (link provided in case the embedded widget, above, does not render, play, or otherwise float yr boat). Often, I feel confined, threatened, handicapped, hampered, and hemmed in by a phrase book, but also know that the small collection of vocabulary and sentence fragments is the only toolkit I have to participate in the culture while abroad.
Having said that, I left the following otherwise useful phrasebooks in San Francisco: Gaelic; Catalan; Spanish. I am flying by the seat of my pants.
I can reliably cause iPhoto to crash by clicking on a slideshow -- any slideshow. In fact, restarting after the first crash showed that almost all of my photographs were gone, but the crash-inducing slideshows remained.

I had ordered a copy of the newest hardback reprint of A Gentleman of Leisure, ostensibly to replace the paperback I bought at Grand Central many, many years ago -- on my first (or second?) visit through New York City. It may well have been the first time I read Wodehouse on my own: my parents avidly read his novels, and took Jeeves and Blandings books on family trips, from which they sometimes read aloud, but I had not read any of his books in high school. I preferred Kerouac and Burroughs and Artaud.
Laughing Gas I just picked up at a rummage sale in Howth.
A Gentleman of Leisure and Laughing Gas are both hilarious, and both are set in Wodehouse's adoptive United States. The action in Laughing Gas is almost entirely in Hollywood, which forms the slapstick backdrop for this novel and also for Evelyn Waugh's deliciously funny "The Loved One": Hollwood in the '30s was so chock-a-block with expatriates, it seems, that you could hardly swing a cat without beaning a half-dozen monocled, bowler-hatted gentlemen.
A Gentleman of Leisure has a sublime plot, although it superficially resembles many of Wodehouse's comic romances. Our protagonist seeks to win the hand of a woman he has only seen across the rail between first- and second-class accomodations in trans-Atlantic passage, and also to settle a dilettante bet about his capability for larceny.
After the second rev of the PowerBook arrived, I found my legs burning from the searing heat dissipated along the body of the laptop. Now with the MacBook Pro, the heat is even more intense, but Marcel Bresink has released a Universal binary of the OSX Temperature Monitor, a fantastic piece of software that reads the hardware monitors to report on CPU and hard-drive temperature. The configuration and ease-of-use are tremendous, and the app as a whole is very OSX-er-iffic. It offers dynamic reports in the menu bar, in the dock, as a dashboard widget, and in its own application pane. So far I have recorded temperatures as high as 82ş, mostly while compiling. Over-night, while idle, the CPU temperature will drop down to the teens.
Another mac tip: To eject a stuck disc from a PowerBook or MacBook Pro, try $ drutil eject.
Several new words, most of which entered my lexicon through reading books written a century or more ago.
The recapitulation of this week of MUNI woes demonstrates that MUNI can work around some problems, but still charges too much, with the result that fewer passengers take rides on the cable cars.
The New York Times report on the increase of affluent bicycle use in the Netherlands.
A lunch-time conversation revealed that I had no idea, none!, of the origin of the word "umbrella", nor of the origin of the device itself.
Several western european languages refer to the device with multiple names, depending on whether it is used for protection against sun (parasol, Sonnenschirm) or rain (parapluie, Regenschirm).
We speculated that the word comes from a long-expired trademark or patent, or perhaps was epoynmous, much as biro comes from its inventor, László Bíró.
Almost anti-climactically, "umbrella" comes from the Latin umbra + a diminutive, ella. The word itself dates back thousands of years, and the concept of the "portable device that creates a shady protected area from the elements" is probably as old as civilization -- a large leaf might qualify as an umbrella.
Reading the Evil Signtist's summary of the "Fell is Hella" sign phenomenon, I clicked through some of the links on the site and found Pittsburgh Signs, a site which sentimentally evokes Pittsburgh through signs and decorative arts photos. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote about the project three years ago.
I was looking through flickr, and a newish feature on the site shows me the comments made on my photostream. I saw that someone had commented on a sign that I particularly liked, and started looking through her photographs. A few pictures further, I saw a giddy snapshot of a friend I haven't seen in years: I last bumped into him, part-way through his world travels, on a bench at Zeitgeist. The world may not be small, but it is only a few clicks from one side to the next.
The photographs I post on flickr are available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 licence. This means that anyone can copy, modify, and re-use the photographs as they wish, as long as they attribute the source (me) and retain the licence for all derivative works.
Reading an article about another hit-and-run in which a motorist kills a cyclist and then drives away makes me all the sadder for Sarah Tucker, who was killed in San Francisco nine months ago, and whose murderer has not been caught. Oddly, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has taken its memorial for Sarah Tucker off-line.
I read about cyclists killed in the middle of the day, in the middle of busy areas, and wonder: how do people escape, or think they can escape, the responsibility for these incidents? Do they think that cyclists wearing helmets make better targets?
Aram was also really excited about the Touch & Go Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Show, and I was glad to see Tyson's swell set of pictures from the weekend, including a gem of Heather with Todd (who looks rather frightening close up to a microphone, especially in his Bricklayer Cake persona).
Wow. (Goddammit, this is real!)
Today I encountered another legal term: replevin means "An action to recover personal property said or claimed to be unlawfully taken." Apparently having a writ of replevin can help one regain property unlawfully taken (!!).
I do miss that bicycle. The poor Kogswell sure had a lot to live up to. That bike, in one fixed-gear incarnation or another, rode Marin fire trails, down Highway One (and, in fact, up that damn highway all the way to Point Reyes, one brutal and blisteringly windy summer day in '00 or '01), and got me to and from bookstores, friends' places, markets, parks, and pretty much anywhere I wanted to go.
The City of Pittsburgh and the Port Authority of Allegheny County are embarking on an ambitious two-bore tunnel to connect the North Side with Downtown Pittsburgh (and the "T": I hope that the new North Side line will properly connect the Downtown and South Side routes at Gateway Center). Now that the North Side is home to new football and baseball fields, and Downtown to a spanking green Convention Center, moving people efficiently and comfortably becomes more important -- despite the bevy of bridges.
Shawn Bennear's Pittsburgh Transit page has excellent photographs of rolling stock old and new (and mod!).
After reading Arnold Zwicky's latest entry in the Language Log, I discovered that I did not know the origin of the word modem, which he lists along with radar and scuba as acronyms that have entered the language as common, rather than proper, nouns.
modem is a portmanteau, the sort of word that delighted Humpty Dumpty: from modulate and demodulate, it describes the function of the instrument which sends digital signals over analogue carriers. The genial egg describes the concept of linguistic portmanteau while explaining the poem Jabberwocky (one of the few English poems I have committed to memory).
I supose that modem will now apply for extra wages.
I learned the legal term appurtenant after reading Clayton Counts's write-up about his being forced to remove the Beachles mash-up album from his web site. Meaning "A right, privilege, or property that is considered incident to the principal property for purposes such as passage of title, conveyance, or inheritance", appurtenant comes from the Late Latin ad + pertinere, "to relate to".
I read Jan Bondeson's outstanding history of science book, Cabinet of Medical Curiosities: this title became a bestseller for Cornell University Press. Dr Bondeson has choice phrases that draw in the reader, such as "the Jesuits had always been enthusiastic gigantologists" in a discussion of the proportions of antedeluvian Man (was Og a 300-cubit behemoth who strode behind Noah's Ark?), as well as a stunning collection of prints and drawings to illustrate his discussion of rabbit-breeding women, toad-vomiting prelate's sons, snake- and lice-infested royal personages, and, of course, children with tails.
Bondeson's writing is engaging, and his historical breadth is impressive: he collates south-east Asian tellings of stories very similar to the familiar Scandinavian, English, and Gaulish tales; he provides ample, but never overwhelming, evidence of the medical and physiological bases for the various phenomena; and he has a strong sense of fun. He enjoyed writing this book, and I really enjoyed reading it.
The Chronicle explains the story behind this picture:
Harry Aleo's mild invective against the stroller-pushing retriever-walking earth-shoe wearing liberals of Noe Valley has long fascinated me, but I did not know about his race-horse hobby nor about his history with 24th Street.
Greg excitedly pointed me to this interview with Corey Rusk of Touch & Go Records in advance of the phenomenally cool Twenty-fifth Anniversary part at The Hideout. ... to which I am not going, alas! The schedule is as "insanely precise" as a Shellac record.
On a similar note: Steve Albini kicks ass.
Yet another reason to love the Language Log: its explanation of the alicious suffix drew my attention to the following quotation.
Going back further still, the American Periodicals Series reveals a punny example of the -(V)licious formation while it was still very much in its infancy. This poor excuse for a joke appeared in the New York Observer and Chronicle of Jan. 3, 1878, in the "Odds & Ends" column:There are beautiful warm soda springs in Colorado, and people who go bathing in them at once exclaim: "Oh! but this is soda-licious!"
In addition to the applications I regularly use and the single widget I use, I have a few other bits of setup for a new laptop.
A few other interesting applications:
It's not literally a crack snack, but close: the Texas state fair has lauded its winners in the annual "you buy it, we fry it" competition:
DALLAS -- There are fried Twinkies and even fried candy bars. Now, vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has come up with a new artery-clogging
concoction for the State Fair of Texas. It's fried Coke.Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke
fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream,
cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Gonzales said the fried Coke came about
just from thinking aloud.Gonzales' diet-buster wins the creativity honor at the second-annual
Big Tex Choice Awards Contest.Judges for the contest chose Shirley London's Fried Praline Perfection
as the tastiest fried delicacy. The two won out among 26 entries such as fried macaroni and cheese and
a deep-fried cosmopolitan.London said she came up with the fried pralines idea after buying
pralines at the fair last year. She plans to sell the pralines
alongside fried marshmallows.Gonzales achieved notoriety in 2005 with the fried peanut butter,
banana, and jelly sandwich -- selling an estimated 25,000 of the
treats, according to the fair's Web site. The site said London got
media attention in 2004 with her fried marshmallows on-a-stick.This is the same state fair that brought about the corn dog. The Web
site said Neil and Carl Fletcher conjured up a sweetened corn-battered
wiener on-a-stick and sold it for 15 cents during the 1942 State Fair
of Texas.
I want to have a "Deep Friday" party, in which parallel banks of deep friers provide sweet and savoury batters for all comers. The default fried item would probably be a Twinkie.
Although this page hints how to get files from ogg and flac into mp3 format, I still want to play them directly from the ipod. Can't.
Clifford Stoll wrote this tense and thrilling account of how he tracked a hacker from his Berkeley UNIX system. This was one of the first episodes of computer forensics, and has become perhaps the most famous. An astronomer, Stoll had the role of sysadmin thrust upon him, and found himself tangled in an international mess. His book includes some tantalizing technical details showing how assumptions in UNIX made for easy hacking.
Stoll now sells Klein bottles and continues work with computers and telescopes. The Electronic Frontier Foundation maintains an online copy of his Stalking the Wily Hacker, the ACM article in which he first published the forensic techniques.
